He is the founder of an independent MTM support business Case Haub Consulting. His network of over 100 pharmacists offers operational support for retail stores and helps to streamline the CMR into an efficient and manageable process for the busy community pharmacist.
Q: How did your background lead you to starting Case Haub Consulting?
I worked with Hyvee pharmacy for years and helped in development of community clinical pharmacy programs. I am board certified in advanced diabetes management and implemented several programs such as insulin pump programming and management, point of care testing services and worked with the local college of pharmacy to develop a community residency program.
Our success there led me to a job working for OutcomesMTM as the director of network performance. Drawing upon my retail experience, I brought a pharmacist’s perspective to the large insurance payer groups.
Q: Why is it so important for pharmacists to take over ownership of MTM?
I am concerned that if pharmacist don’t take responsibility for MTM soon that the health plans will begin seeking other options. Pharmacists are the drug experts and offer more value than merely dispensing drug products. I believe that the pharmacy practice in its purest form is the between a patient and pharmacist when they work together to resolve drug issues.
MTM gives pharmacists a chance to stretch their clinical muscles in the retail setting. When speaking about the importance of pharmacist-led MTM Mike agreed, “Resolving drug issues and optimizing medication therapy is the purest form of pharmacy between a patient and pharmacist.” Case Haub Consulting is working to improve efficiency and sustainability of clinical programs for retail pharmacies.
Q: What advice would you give to pharmacists who want to start their own businesses?
Networking is imperative and pharmacy is quite a small world so mind your manners. Also don’t be afraid to fail, to pivot, to make adjustments. You don’t have to have it all figured out.
I for one am glad to have a pharmacist like Mike in my corner. He is fighting for the “little guys” and a shining example of the professionalism and entrepreneurial talent pharmacists possess. Thanks so much for sharing your story with the Pharmapreneur Community!
