Self-Sabotage and the “Traps” of Building a Pharmacy Consulting Business

by | Nov 23, 2017 | Consulting Pharmacist Education

“I was scared to DEATH, but I wanted to be a successful entrepreneur more than I wanted to hang on to those greenbacks.”

I’ve seen it time and again.  Pharmacists who are uncomfortable with ‘putting themselves out there’ so they waste time self-sabotaging their business and ultimately their entrepreneurial dreams.

What exactly is self-sabotage?

According to Psychology Today, “Behavior is said to be self-sabotaging when it creates problems and interferes with long-standing goals. One of the most common self-sabotaging behaviors is procrastination.”

Another self-sabotaging behavior, a long-time favorite of mine, is imposter syndrome.  The feeling that I wasn’t ENOUGH.  Smart enough, educated enough, old enough, you name it.

When I was first building my Consulting Business, I did every single one of the ‘wrong things’ to get started.

  • Perfect website – CHECK!
  • New headshots – CHECK!
  • Business cards – CHECK!

Once I had all the “required” marketing pieces in place, I began procrastinating by trying to decide which Masters level program or board certification I needed to obtain “to get my ducks in a row”…

As a result, I was floundering, wasting time, money and energy.  Problem was, I wasn’t getting anywhere near the outcome I dreamed of.

Then one day, in 2015, I decided to make a change…

I did a free consultation call with a business coach I thought MAYBE could help me get the results I wanted so badly.  Later that week, I charged the scariest 4-figure sum on my credit card I had ever done.

That’s right, FOUR-FIGURES!

I was scared to DEATH, but I wanted to be a successful entrepreneur more than I wanted to hang on to those greenbacks.

The ROI for my investment for my first year in business turned out to be around $6:$1

…not a bad investment!

Plus, it was the first thing I did to actually move my business FORWARD.

Since then, I’ve been growing, adapting and changing my business at lightening speed.

Just check out this recap of my first year in business from 2016 titled My First 12 Months in Online Business: A Case Study.

Currently, I’m working hard on putting together my numbers and can’t wait to give you THIS YEAR’S update!

In the mean time, I want to encourage you to spend the rest of 2017 envisioning what you really want for your business and how you can take action on the RIGHT THINGS.

Here are the most common ways I’ve seen pharmacists waste money and time focusing on the WRONG THINGS:

  1. Building an Expensive Website
  2. Creating a “Perfect” Name or Logo
  3. Hiring a Marketing Agency
  4. Building up Social Media Site without a Strategy
  5. Paying for Advertising
  6. Accumulating Multiple Advanced Training/Certifications/CEUs

Are you guilty of any of these self-sabotaging behaviors?
